About the GIMS Research Institute
The Global Institute for Mathematical Sciences (GIMS) is a research fellowship institute that supports exceptional students in conducting original research across mathematics and related scientific fields. Founded in 2023 by Dr. Laura Schaposnik and Dr. James Unwin — both distinguished Oxford alumni and active researchers — GIMS provides structured research experiences that mirror the rigor and mentorship found in competitive academic programs.
Our Mission
Our Mission
GIMS is committed to cultivating the next generation of scientific thinkers by offering research fellowships that enable students to:
define and investigate substantive research questions
work with mentors appointed by the Institute
produce results in formats suitable for competitions, conferences, or academic dissemination
develop critical research communication skills
Unlike traditional tutoring, GIMS fellowships separate fellowship funding from mentor assignment, ensuring an ethical, transparent, and academically credible research environment.

Dr. Laura Schaposnik
Dr. Laura Schaposnik
Dr. Schaposnik obtained her PhD from the University of Oxford. Her research spans topics in geometry, biophysics, graph theory, epidemiology and machine learning. She has received numerous awards for her work including from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Simons Foundation. Her high school mentees have won many prizes, including Top-3 in the National Siemens Competition.
Dr. James Unwin
Dr. James Unwin
Dr. Unwin received his PhD from the University of Oxford and has published on cosmology, astrophysics, economics, particle physics, geography, and politics. His work has been highlighted in 100's of media outlets including New Scientist and New York Times. His high school mentees include three finalists in the Top-10 of Regeneron STS and a Yau Gold Medalist.
